What passing at Bletchley costs
Expected cost of the test cycle for the average candidate at a 51.5% centre.
- Expected attempts (1 ÷ pass rate)1.94
- DVSA fees at £62 weekday£120
- Retake lessons (0.94 × 7 hr × £38)£251
- Test cycle at this centre£371
- Against a national-average centre-£19
- Extra queue time from retakes13.8 wk
Add the parts that do not change with the centre and the full bill from provisional to licence at South East lesson rates is about £2,138: £34 provisional, £23 theory, 45 hours of tuition at £38 (£1,710) and the test cycle above. Full cost stack.
What 51.5% at Bletchley actually means for your budget.
9,415 candidates took the car practical test at Bletchley during 2025/26 and 4,845 of them passed, a pass rate of 51.5%. That is a high-volume centre, ranked 166th of 308 on pass rate, and 22nd of 32 inside South East.
That lands within 1.4 percentage points of the 50.03% national figure and 1.7 points below the 53.2% South East average, which makes Bletchley an ordinary centre on the DVSA table and puts the cost question back on preparation rather than location.
Turn 51.5% into money. One divided by the pass rate gives 1.94 expected attempts before a first pass, so the average candidate at Bletchley pays the £62 weekday DVSA fee about 1.94 times, or £120. Add 0.94 expected retakes at 7 hours of extra tuition each, charged at the South East rate of £38 an hour, and the extra lessons come to £251. The test cycle at Bletchley is therefore about £371. Testing here therefore saves about £19 against a centre sitting on the 50.03% national average, because the higher pass rate buys back part of an attempt.
A fail at Bletchley costs time as well as money. The median wait between booking and testing was 14.6 weeks in July 2026, 2.7 weeks above the 11.9-week national median. At 0.94 expected retakes that is about 13.8 weeks of additional queueing, and most learners keep paying for an hour or two a month through it. In the same month DVSA offered 3,276 standard slots inside the booking window here and 0.2% of them were still free to book.
The first-attempt picture is harder here than the headline. 4,758 candidates sat their first test at Bletchley and 2,360 passed, 49.6%, which is 1.9 points below the all-attempts rate. 65 of those first tests were passed with no driving faults recorded at all, 1.37% of them. Budget for the second booking from the start rather than treating it as the exception.
Since 2021/22 the pass rate at Bletchley has risen by 4.7 points, from 46.8% to 51.5%. Test volume has grown over the same span, from 8,017 to 9,415 tests a year. On the cost model above, that shift alone is worth about £64 to the average candidate.
Male candidates passed at 52.0% and female candidates at 50.9%, a gap of 1.1 points across 4,809 and 4,606 tests. Automatic tests made up 42.7% of the workload and passed at 47.9%, 3.5 points below the manual-inclusive rate, worth knowing before paying the automatic lesson premium. Month to month the rate ran from 47.4% in September 2025 to 55.2% in January 2026, a 7.8-point swing that shows how little a single month proves.
Among centres of a similar size in South East, Lee On The Solent runs 11.8 points higher at 63.2%. On the same arithmetic that is roughly £118 of expected difference. Before moving, price the switch: a new instructor or extra travel for route familiarity typically costs £60 to £120 plus two settling-in lessons, which eats most of a gap under about eight points.

A 17-year-old passes at 63.6% here. A 25-year-old passes at 49.1%.
The single figure most people quote for Bletchley is the all-ages 51.5%. Underneath it, 1,256 tests by 17-year-olds returned 63.6% and 289 by 25-year-olds returned 49.1%. That is 14.5 points, against 14.9 points between the same two ages across Great Britain.
Put that through the same arithmetic the rest of this page uses and the gap stops being academic. A 17-year-old at Bletchley expects 1.57 attempts, £250 in fees and retake lessons. A 25-year-old expects 2.04 attempts and £402, £152 more on identical £62 fees and the same £38 South East lesson rate. The only thing that moved was the pass rate.
17-year-olds here pass at almost exactly the national rate for their age (63.6%). Against South East, where the same age passes 64.6%, they are 1.0 points behind. Either way, budgeting a 17-year-old against this centre's all-ages 51.5% is pessimistic by 12.2 points.
Bletchley is large enough that DVSA published every age cell from 17 to 25 with its counts intact, which is true of 187 of the 307 centre pages here. Nothing in the table above is withheld, rounded up from a small base or filled in by us.
Age here is a proxy, and it is worth saying so plainly. The DVSA figures carry no information about lesson history, instructor or hours, so the gap above is what the record shows rather than an explanation of it. The practical implication is about continuity of tuition, not about waiting or not waiting to book.

Pass rate by age at Bletchley
DVSA table DRT122D, April 2025 to March 2026. Dashed line is the same age across Great Britain.
What each age costs at Bletchley, on the same arithmetic as the rest of this page.
Expected attempts is 1 ÷ the pass rate for that age, fees are £62 an attempt and retake lessons are 7 hours at the South East rate of £38. Ages where DVSA withheld the counts are shown as withheld and are not priced: a rate the agency would not put a denominator against is not a rate to budget from.

Pass rates are DVSA’s. The pounds are ours, on the same fee and lesson rate the rest of this page uses, applied to each age’s published rate and nothing else. Age is not the cause: the DVSA figures describe who passed, not why, and a 17-year-old mid-course typically arrives with recent, continuous tuition behind them. The national age curve.

Matched on annual test volume rather than distance, because a centre doing 9,415 tests a year faces a comparable road and traffic mix. Cost column uses the South East lesson rate of £38 throughout, so the only variable is the pass rate.

Pass rates, test volumes, gender splits and waiting times on this page are published statistics from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), taken from Driving test and theory test data: cars, tables DRT122A (Car driving test pass rates by gender and month: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122C (Car driving test pass rates by first driving attempt and gender, including zero faults: test centres, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122D (Car driving test pass rates by age (17 to 25 year olds), year and test centre, updated 2026-06-25), DRT122E (Automatic car driving test pass rates by gender: test centres, updated 2026-06-25) and DRT122F (Car driving test waiting times and availability by driving test centre, updated 2026-08-12). Centre-level figures cover the April 2025 to March 2026 financial year; the national quarterly series runs to June 2026. Snapshot taken 2026-09-04.

Pass rates are DVSA published statistics reproduced under the Open Government Licence, not our assessment of any centre. Great Britain only; Northern Ireland tests are run separately by the DVA. DVSA cautions that centre figures below about 100 tests a year are not robust for comparison.
Age figures are single years of age from DRT122D and are reproduced exactly as published, withheld cells included. DVSA replaces the counts in small age cells with “..”, in most cases while still printing that cell’s pass rate; those cells are shown here as withheld and are excluded from every comparison, ranking and cost figure on this page. Nothing withheld is reconstructed from the block total.
